Pink Diamonds - An Introduction

You may be aware of pink diamonds for their stunning colour range, tales of scarcity, or both. These natural Australian diamonds have been unearthed by the Argyle Diamond Mine, the largest producer of pink diamonds in the world, which closed in 2020.

How do these stones achieve their colour?

We know of the chemical composition of diamonds and how they are formed. Diamonds have been unearthed in a variety of colours, which achieve this colouring through trace elements - for example traces of boron forming the colouring in blue diamonds. What makes pink diamonds unique is that there have been no contaminants, impurities or trace elements found.

Some theories to their pink colouring include distortion in the earth’s mantle or seismic shocks during their formation. However scientists have only been able to speculate, and are left with a beautiful mystery!

Grading Pink Diamonds

When it comes to grading the colour of a diamond, the GIA uses three attributes;

Hue - The tint of colour present in the stone

Tone - How light or dark this colour is

Saturation - The strength of the colour

These are each considered when grading pink diamonds, however Argyle has developed their own system, the Argyle Pink Diamond Grading System, to take into account the all-important colour and intensity of each stone. This scale is now internationally recognised as a grading system for pink diamonds.

The Argyle Pink Diamond Grading System

The Blush Pink Diamonds range that we stock was created in response to the demand and scarcity of Argyle pink diamonds. Using the FLP (Fancy Light Pink / 8P-9P) colour range means a more affordable price point while still offering a beautiful and unique piece of jewellery.
